Abstract

Background

Dapoxetine is an anxiolytic (anti-depressant) medication commonly used to treat premature ejaculation (PE) and premature ejaculation-related sexual dysfunction (PE/PDD), among others. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of dapoxetine in the treatment of PE/PDD in China.

Methods

This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. We included 9 patients with PE or PE/PDD who received dapoxetine (25 mg) in a dose of 60 mg orally, for 12 weeks. The patients were asked to take an initial sexual stimulus and to receive sildenafil (40 mg) on a daily basis for a week before the study. The study was conducted according to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.

Results

In the study, the incidence of PE/PDD was significantly higher in patients with PE/PDD than in those with PE/SAD. The number of PE/PDD-related events was significantly higher in the group receiving dapoxetine compared with those receiving placebo (P=0.021).

Conclusion

The efficacy of dapoxetine was significantly superior for the treatment of PE/PDD in China. This study suggests that dapoxetine could be considered as a novel therapeutic option for the treatment of PE/PDD in China.

Introduction

The prevalence of premature ejaculation (PE) and premature ejaculation-related sexual dysfunction (PDD) has increased significantly in recent decades []. Among them, PE and PPDD are frequently associated with significant distress and impairment, and both can have devastating effects on daily lives [, ].

PE is the most common sexual disorder affecting approximately 20% of men worldwide, and a major cause of PE in China is premature ejaculation. In the United States, the prevalence of PE is estimated at 6.7% []. PE is common among young men and can cause substantial distress due to poor oral hygiene and psychological problems []. PE is defined as a persistent or recurrent inability to achieve orgasm after ejaculation. The global prevalence of PE is estimated to increase from 6.7% in 2012 [], and it has been reported that 30% of men experience PE in their lifetime [].

Dapoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) is a medication commonly used to treat PE and PE/PDD in China. The most common indications for dapoxetine use in China are anxiety and depression [].

Although the efficacy and safety of dapoxetine in the treatment of PE/PDD have not been extensively studied, it has been reported that dapoxetine is superior to sildenafil in the treatment of premature ejaculation in both clinical and epidemiological studies. A meta-analysis of the efficacy and safety of dapoxetine in the treatment of PE/PDD in China was carried out by Zhang et al. in 2015 [].

Dapoxetine is a fluoroSSRI drug. It works by replacing the balance of serotonin in the brain, which may increase the chances of a positive or a negative reaction.

It may also increase the risk of a positive reaction, and if you take it with some other fluoroSSRIs, you may feel similar changes, but this may not be the same as having Premature Ejaculation.
